Vancouver Sex Work Community Alliance

Converting Workshops to Online Learning

We collaborated to develop an interactive eLearning course for healthcare providers, focusing on delivering safe, non-stigmatizing care to sex workers. The project aimed to break down barriers to accessing care, ultimately leading to better health outcomes and reduced healthcare costs.

Background

Access to healthcare is a universal need, but stigma and discrimination can cause barriers for individuals who are at the biggest risk for harm. The Canadian Centre for Sexuality and Gender Diversity (CGSHE) and Health Initiative for Men (HIM) developed an in-person workshop to help reduce stigma and discrimination amongst healthcare workers towards sex workers. The in-person workshops were extremely effective, but the organizations hoped to increase their reach beyond the Vancouver area and ensure the content could remain accessible after the project’s funding ran out. Hot Neon suggested developing an eLearning course that could be added to BC’s health authority training platform, LearningHub.

Solution

We collaborated to develop an interactive eLearning course for healthcare providers, focusing on delivering safe, non-stigmatizing care to sex workers.

The project aimed to break down barriers to accessing care, ultimately leading to better health outcomes and reduced healthcare costs.

The primary audience for this program consists of healthcare providers, with content tailored to their varying levels of knowledge and motivation. The program’s goal is to foster a culture of understanding and empathy, equipping healthcare workers with the knowledge and confidence to support sex workers appropriately.

Key deliverables include a series of videos and interactive modules that present information clearly and practically, directly linking to the learners’ goals and needs. Utilizing engaging and evocative content, this project seeks to inspire healthcare providers to implement best practices and advocate for sex workers’ rights, ultimately improving the quality of care they provide.

Impact

Stigma is the biggest barrier to healthcare experienced by the people that we work with. We provide in-person trainings to healthcare professionals that teach them how to recognize and address this stigma and make healthcare more accessible. Unfortunately, non-profit funding is precarious and it’s never guaranteed how long we’ll be able to do this work for. Adapting our in-person trainings for healthcare professionals to an e-learning course helps us ensure that our work will continue even if the funding runs out.

Working with Hot Neon exceeded our expectations in every way! We got to work with a skilled team of graphic and UX designers to bring our vision to life. They were responsive, creative, and willing to engage in a sensitive topic with such professionalism and care. They were efficient and well resourced and took care of everything - from reviewing our existing material to hiring voice actors. They were quick to learn the nuances of sex work and apply them to a beautifully designed e-learning course.

We partnered with BC Cancer to create a 4-minute animated video aimed at demonstrating the importance and process of advance care planning (ACP). The video focuses on the patient journey through a first-person narrative, utilizing 2D animation to elicit emotions and emphasize the value of ACP.

Hot Neon worked with Accent Inns to conduct research into the orientation priorities of their different locations. We conducted focus groups at properties across the province to learn about the unique concerns and challenges with onboarding new employees.

Hot Neon developed an interactive scenario where users could explore the components of a good apology and practice their skills. This scenario employs a gamified user interface and cinematic animation, creating an immersive experience.
