About The Project

The British Columbia Civil Liberties Association (BCCLA) called upon the Hot Neon team to produce an educational video aimed at students to teach about smartphone rights while attending school. The video outlines that according to current laws, teachers and school administrators have the legal authority to confiscate and access a student’s phone. Since most students carry most, if not all of their personal information on their phones, it comes into question from a legal point-of-view exactly how much information on their phone they are required to give up in the name of Safety. Using rough sketches and reference images shot in our studios, our team wanted to depict both an average student going though a typical school day and showing darker sequences after the student’s phone becomes confiscated, aligning with the dialog regarding Canada’s current Smartphone Laws.
